SRS Updates

5-12-24

Good evening, Families,

Happy Mother’s Day to all our SRS moms!  We honor you and all that you do to support your children both in and out of school.

Although Teacher Appreciation Week has come to an end, our gratitude for our teachers does not.  Thank you to all our teachers and educational staff for the care and dedication you give to the students of Southwick Regional School each and every day!

On Monday (5/13), SRS will participate in Mental Health Awareness Day.  Everyone is encouraged to wear green to bring awareness to the mental health concerns that impact young people.  Outside agencies will be present during lunches to provide information and resources to students.  We welcome Fresh Fitness Training Center, Advanced Psychotherapy, Dhira Yoga, Serendipity, and BHN, just to name a few.

On Saturday, May 18th, the Class of 2025 will sponsor the Prom at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield.  In preparation for the event, Prom Go-ers will be invited to participate in the Stop the Swerve event on Friday (5/17) to emphasize the importance of making safe choices on Prom night and throughout graduation season.  This week you will notice a crash vehicle in front of the school which serves to highlight the potential dangers of driving under the influence.

The MCAS Math assessment will be administered on May 21st and 22nd to students in grades 7, 8, and 10.  As a reminder, students in grades 9, 11, and 12 will have a delayed start on these days.  School will open at 10:30 for non-testing students with a 10:35 class start.

Senior Finals will be held May 21st- May 23rd.  The schedule is as follows:

May 21 G block- class at 10: 35

H block- Final at 12:45

May 22 E block- class at 10:35

                                F block Final at 12:45

May 23 E block final at 7:35

                                G block final at 9:15

This spring, the Attorney General and Commissioner’s office in partnership with the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, Mass Interscholastic Athletic Association, Massachusetts School Administrators Association, and DESE have been providing trainings for school districts and athletic leadership as part of the Addressing Hate in School Sports statewide initiative.

We are excited to partner with Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society to bring the Addressing Hate in Schools program to Southwick Regional School students and staff.  On June 11th, students and staff will participate in an assembly program that empowers participants to recognize their leadership abilities, understand the power of bystanders, and inspire empathy.  Each assembly is designed to be highly interactive and will include customized activities that provide the safe space to raise awareness, challenge thinking, and inspire collaborative thought-leadership.  Next fall, student leaders will have the opportunity to participate in smaller group training as an extension of the program.

SRS RAMS Spring Sports 2024

Despite the wet and cold weather throughout April, our spring sports teams have been going strong since the end of March. We had a tremendous turn out of student-athletes for our 6 spring sports.

Baseball - 35 students.  We welcome back coaches Ben Bohlke, Jake Goodreau and Dan Morrissey from last year, and are pleased to add Alex Trzasko and Dan McClellan to the coaching staff.

Many baseball players came out that allowed us to expand the program.  We were just a few players short of having a second JV team, but we hope that the development of the players this season will continue to grow the program next year.  Results wise, the Varsity team is having a strong season and are holding their own in the top half of the MIAA Division 4 rankings. As of 5/3 the varsity team is ranked #15 in Division 4 with a record of 8-3.

Softball- 30 students. We are pleased to introduce Jen Yelin, supported by Melissa Trzasko, as our new Varsity coaches for 2024.  They have already brought much positive energy to the team and program. We also welcome back Colleen Giroux as the JV coach, supported by Josh Lightcap. While the results have not been going our way, our softball coaches and players are building a strong foundation of team unity for the future. Softball will be graduating 8 seniors this year, so please come out on May 14 to celebrate our senior softball players.

Volleyball (Boys)- 20 students.  We welcome back Head Coach Kaitlyn Anthony who is supported this year by Julia Jacobs.  Our young volleyball team, with no seniors, is gaining some valuable experience this year.  They are currently ranked #40 in Division 2, with a record of 4-9.

Track - 62 students. (32G, 30B).  We had an exceptional turnout for our Track team this spring, under the instruction of returning coaches Bob Blackburn and Kevin Pfau, and we welcome Ciera Tseka to the coaching staff. The team has already produced some fantastic individual and team performances. Please join us to support the athletes in the final home meet of the season on Tuesday May 14th at 4pm.

Unified Track- 11 students.  We are so pleased to welcome back our wonderful coaching team of Judi Bean, Apryl Penland and Kathryn Ezeugwu. With a weather disrupted schedule the team has competed in two away and one home meet. Please join us at the track on Tuesday May 7 to celebrate our seniors. We wish our athletes all the best as they prepare for the State Divisionals on May 15 (@ Holyoke HS) and State Championships on May 22 (@ Natick HS).

Lacrosse (Girls)- 22 students.  In year 2 of the program, our returning Coach Sydney Liptak continues to work the team at practices, together with a handful of scrimmages against other JV teams.  The energy is positive as the team continues to progress towards becoming a full Varsity team in future years.

May 17 – final day for regular season games.

May 20-28 – Western Mass Tournament.

May 29 – MIAA State Tournament begins.

June 6 - At the conclusion of the season we will celebrate our student-athletes and coaches at our Spring Sports Celebration.  Please mark Thursday June 6 in your calendars.  More information will be sent to all student-athletes and parents next week.
